The entrance to the Library is by way of Vincenzo Scamozzi's splendid colonnaded
atrium (N° 2 on the plan), in which exhibitions of old books and documents are
frequently put on. There is a reception desk for visitor information.
Off the atrium, there is a small room (N° 3) in which hang portraits of former
librarians and other scholars whose work was bound up with the history of the
Library. Beyond this room, there are the Borrowing Desk (N° 4), the General
Catalogue and the Bibliographic Service (N° 5). The card catalogue is divided
into two parts: acquisitions of printed works up to 1976 (N° 4) and those since
1976 (N° 5). There are also facilities for multimedia and telematic consultation
of internet, the Sbn, the Bergamo library network, data bases and CD-Roms
(N° 5).
On the first floor, the Salone Furietti (N° 10) is the main Reading Room.
The sector marked A is reserved for the consultation of rare books, manuscripts,
archive material, music and pictures. The catalogues and inventories of these
materials are situated by the main desk. In the sector marked B, modern printed
works may be read. Reference works are ranged on open shelves around the walls
according to the Dewey decimal system. The Reading Room assistants are ready to
help with any information. There is a computer terminal for reader use.
The Photocopying Room is off the Salone Furietti (17). The Library's publications
are on show here and are available for purchase.
Also on the first floor there is the Periodicals Room (N° 11), for the consultation
of journals and newspapers. The most recent numbers of the main titles are displayed
on open shelving and there is a computer terminal for reader use.
Through the Periodicals Room, there is a room of microfilm readers (N° 12). For
reasons of conservation, many works may only be consulted on microfilmed copy.
There is a photocopying machine for reader use.
